Monique Bareham Cancer Survivorship 2017

Monique Bareham

Monique Bareham is the President of the Lymphoedema Support Group of South Australia and Consumer Advisor to the Australasian Lymphology Association. Monique is a Breast Cancer Survivor and lives with Cancer Related Lymphoedema. The challenge of adjusting to her 'new normal' after cancer was exacerbated by her diagnsosis of 'severe early stage lymphoedema' during her treatments. Through her own lived experience, she discovered that there are many 'gaps' in awareness, knowledge, and treatment options for those at risk of or living with Cancer Related Lymphoedema in South Australia. It was precisely at her lowest point as a cancer survivor – about 3 years post diagnosis, that the reality of living with the lifelong chronic condtion of lymphoedema became a major source of distress to her. Monique came to understand that the only way she could make sense of it was to draw on her lived experiences to find ways to improve processes in lymhpoedema management for all. Her background in Education and Management assisted her in carving out a role for herself as a Lymhpoedema Advocate. Further advocacy interests include returning to work after cancer and fertility and cancer treatment. Monique continues to participated in research projects and awareness activites relating to these issues also. Monique's vision is for all cancer survivors to have access to comprehensive and timely advice about cancer related lymphoedema as well as appropriate treatment options and financial assistance when required
